6 tips for thesis writing:
Thesis writing is a daunting task - a few simple tips, followed with a little organization, just might make all the difference between a stress-free and a stress-filled experience…
6 thesis writing tips you should follow:
- Always carry a notepad - write down ideas about your thesis proposal as they come to you; this may be on the bus, on the train, walking to lectures, out for a meal, on the toilet, etc - you never know which idea will be for keeps.
- Don’t be overly influenced by your peers - this is YOUR thesis- not theirs.
- Set goals and time-lines - don’t expect to feel motivated to sit and write your thesis all at once! You’ll need to plan set dates to accomplish your different goals.
- Photocopy all relevant articles - you will find holding onto articles, scribbling on them, highlighting them and making notes will help the creative juices flow.
- Every draft you print out, print on different coloured paper - don’t mix up older versions with newer ones. You can chop, paste and edit together parts easily, and know which version of your thesis each section is from!
- Attend thesis defences - see how other students present their findings, see what interactions occur, and note what you would do or say to make the defence better.
